Shadow Work Ritual
Developing a Shadow Work Ritual can help infuse your Shadow Work processes into a transformative experience. It is recommended to get specific items for this ritual, such as a Shadow Work journal, pen, candles and use them only for Shadow Work.
Materials Needed:
A black candle
A lighter or matches
Journal and pen
Optional: A grounding crystal (such as obsidian or black tourmaline)
Ritual Steps:
Preparation:
Find a comfortable and quiet space where you won't be disturbed. Consider making this space your "safe space" to do shadow work. If you wish, you can setup a specific altar for this. You can reference the Dark Goddess Correspondences article for more information.
Setup your space as you feel fit.
Take a few deep breaths to center yourself and ground your energy. Take the time to focus on your breathing, trying the 7-4-8 method(inhale through your nose for 7 seconds, hold for 4 and exhale through your mouth for 8).
Light the black candle. As you light the candle, visualize its flame as a beacon illuminating the shadows within yourself.
Setting Intentions: Close your eyes and take a moment to reflect on your intention for this Shadow Work ritual. Speak your intention aloud or silently in your mind, stating it clearly and with conviction.
Reflection and Journaling:
Take the time to journal, reflect or whatever you need to do. If needed, include the steps within a purging or burning ritual.
Closing:
Once you feel ready to conclude the ritual, take a moment to express gratitude for the insights and awareness gained. Blow out the candle, symbolizing the end of the ritual.
Post Shadow Work Aftercare:
It is important to have a self-care aftercare plan. Sometimes Shadow Work can be a little heavy and it is best to go easy and gentle on yourself afterwards. Find what soothes, comforts and nurtures you.
Here are a few ideas, but feel free to find what works for you:
-Gentle movement like yoga, stretching, tai chi or a walk to help move energy and ground you into your body
-Bubble bath
-Comfort food
-Connect with friends or family
-Watch TV
-Read a book
-Cleaning
-Take a nap
